The Coen brothers’ new film Hail, Caesar! is reason enough for me to delve into the history of MGM – and the myths too. I was delighted to write a feature about the film, and its relationship to Hollywood history, for the April 2016 issue of Sight & Sound magazine.

For the same issue, I wrote about the gorgeous new restoration of René Clair’s silent comic masterpiece Les Deux Timides (1928), the new Flicker Alley box set of Chaplin’s Essanay comedies, and Silent Women, a collection of writing on the history of women in the early years of the film industry.
