The October 2015 issue of Sight & Sound is a lovely thing, devoted to overlooked films by female directors. I contributed an entry on Alice Guy-Blaché’s The Ocean Waif, and wrote the Primal Screen column on the influence of women in early Hollywood. Just to redress the balance, I also reviewed Paul McEwan’s new BFI Film Classic on The Birth of a Natiion, which has definitely not been overlooked, and was definitely directed by a dude.
